February 23, 2009 · Filed Under Bill O'Reilly, Fox News, Michael Savage, Rush Limbaugh · 1 Comment

If you happen to be an evening MSNBC fan, haven’t had an opportunity to turn on Fox News, or have yet to open your deluge of forwarded emails from your prolific Republican cousin, conservative talk radio and TV were here to give the Folks the real story behind the Stimulus…, I mean, Spending Bill. Get it? ‘Cause the bill costs money.  Heh-heh.

Did you know that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) included a provision in the economic recovery law calling for $8 billion to be spent on a high-speed rail line between Southern California and Las Vegas?

Thanks to talk radio and Fox News, the Folks™ know.

Did you know that House Leader, Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) put $20 million into Read more

The Fairness Doctrine Serves No One

Liberal columnist and former liberal talk show host here, so you can assume I am…a liberal.   More than once I’ve written about the need for the Fairness Doctrine - a policy that would require the holders of broadcast licenses both to present controversial issues of public importance and to do so in a manner that was honest, equitable and balanced - but  yesterday I had a change of heart.  While listening to talk radio in my non-satellite radio car yesterday (I live in the Philadelphia area so if you want to listen to political talk it has to be conservative), I heard Sean Hannity speak of how unfair a re-institution the Fairness Doctrine would be. The light and lilting tones of the powerhouse hunk of conservative talk must have Hannitized me for it finally hit me that there was no reason for the FD, especially on talk radio.

I’d love to be able to tune in the likes of liberal hosts like Stephanie Miller, Ed Read more

Education Stimulus Needs to Stimulate Students

February 16, 2009 · Filed Under Barack Obama, Failure · 2 Comments

The Stimulus Package provides $5 billion for Education Secretary Arne Duncan to back new approaches to modernize our educational infrastructure.  But while schools, especially in urban areas, are in dire need of modernization (wouldn’t hurt to start with clean and safe bathrooms), spending billions upgrading the physical environment without also fixing the broken kids who end up dropping out (a report by America’s Promise Alliance concluded that nationwide over 50% of our students drop out of school every year) just applies an expensive, albeit cosmetic-only face on a half empty future for both the students and society as a whole.

To be sure the Stimulus Package is a spending bill, but we must spend smartly in education.  Keeping kids engaged and in school is a cost-cutting measure that positively impacts a child’s emotional and physical health as well as their effect on the not-so-far-in-the-future worlds of business, art and culture. The savings to institutional and governmental support systems, based on those who will stay in Read more

O’Reilly Pummeled By Helen Thomas And The Grande Dame of Presidential Press Corp Didn’t Even Have To Show Up

Hey Bill, sensitive much?

Oh, to be a FoxNews fly on the wall at the O’Reilly Factor preproduction meeting putting together Wednesday night’s show.

Factor Producer: Let’s see. We have the Stimulus Package being finalized. The president’s press conference. Unemployment reaching critical mass. Banking CEOs testify in…

Bill: Helen Thomas!

FP: Bill, we covered her last night.

Bill: I’m not talking about covering her, damnnit! I’m talking how I was covered covering her!

FP: Bill, that’s not news. That’s opinion based on opinion. We can save that for one of the letters we write at the end of the show segment.

Bill: No! It’s too important to the Folks.

FP: How about in Pinheads and Patriots? You could hammer the entire Far-Left and throw in a dig at GE all in one shot.

Bill: It’s not a one shot issue. It’s a whole show topic.

FP: Bill. You’re going to look a little sensitive. How about if we tape it and you can see for yourself how…

Bill: No bleeping taping. We’ll do it live!

And so it Read more

What Are Conservative Talkers Afraid Of?

February 6, 2009 · Filed Under Bill O'Reilly, Fox News, Media · 5 Comments

The Right is back to their old tricks, as if they ever left them.

Now it’s not the Fairness Doctrine. It’s the Censorship Doctrine. Instead of giving both sides fair access to the airwaves, it’s taking it away from the Right.

For the record, the Fairness Doctrine was a U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) policy that required the holders of broadcast licenses to present issues in a manner that was honest, equitable, and balanced. Not just say you’re balanced. Actually be balanced.

Calling the Fairness Doctrine “censorship” is as much a misnomer as calling Pro-choice groups “Pro-abortion.” It’s simply an attempt to demonize the opposition without the need for accuracy. The Fairness Doctrine doesn’t tell a talker what he can say nor even mandates the need to tell the truth. As with most of this self-serving branding it uses an Orwellian contortion to portray the issue as the opposite of the truth. If there is any voice that is being excluded, it is that of the Left. In some major cities, no major talk station uses a so-called liberal talk show host in their weekday Read more
