Bill O’Reilly - What A Joke

October 6, 2008 · Filed Under Bill O'Reilly, Fox News, Kind of Satire, Media

This was the year that satire has changed the politics forever. Let me
say that again. Satire has changed the 2008 race and politics forever. I
said it again because that’s pretty much the title of my book - “How
Satire Changed 2008 and Politics Forever” - that I should have finished
on inaugural day 2009. Besides disqualifying me from moderating the next
debate, it defines the foremost difference between this election and any
other.

Tina Fey, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Bill Maher, Andy Borowitz, David
Letterman. They’ve all played their part with immense help from the
candidates.

But no one of them is more amusing than Fox’s top clown, Bill O’Reilly.
Just hearing him say how objective he is. How he has no horse in this race. How it’s those (other) conservative talkers who are the liars. Funny stuff.

But this week he dealt out a sketch that would have had Saturday  Night Live writers green with absurdist jealousy, finding pure Factor comedy magic as at the same time Bill made sure that the microscopic, last iota of any credibility that might have hidden somewhere under his immense ego and incivility, surely and embarrassingly, left the building.

And he did it with side-splitting panache.

Abbott and Costello were sent spinning in their “Slowly, I turned” graves
as Bill brought Massachusetts Congressman Barney Frank on the TV Factor
for what quickly became a shouting, berating of Frank. Why Frank
continues to show up for these Fox farces is beyond me, but at least it
proves the guy is not intimidated by O’Reilly.

It was supposed to be a discussion of Frank’s handling of the financial
crisis in his position as co-chairman of the House Financial Services Committee .

Discussion quickly became, “Jerry Springer.”

Frank began to explain how it all worked legislatively.

O’Reilly started yelling, “Stop the b.s. here!…Stop the crap!” “Come
on, you coward!”

To Frank’s credit, he was able to get in that O’Reilly is “boorish,” “I’m
not going to be bullied by your ranting,” and “This is why your stupidity
gets in the way of rational discussion.”

O’Reilly screamed, “This is bull!”

Frank hit back with, “This manly stuff is very unbecoming from you,” and
“You think toughness is yelling and ranting and raving and trying to
bully.”

Bill went Professor Backwards as he played a soundbite where Frank said
that Fannie May and Freddie Mac were not good investments which Bill used
to support his contention that Frank said it was a good investment.
Frank admonished… “You distort consistently.”

“That’s a joke,”yelled Bill.

Frank smacked that softball out of the stadium.

“The joke was to think that I could have a rational discussion with you.”

If you had a funny bone in your body, by this time you had to be on the
floor.

“You don’t listen at all,” declared Frank. “Maybe you do listen but
you’re too dumb to understand.”

And finally Bill closed with his best line, admitting what we’ve all know for quite a while.

“I’m the dumb guy,” said Bill to Frank. “You’re the brilliant guy.”

Ah…the funniest comedy is always in the truth.

    “Slowly I turned . . . ”

    Actually the Three Stooges.

    But point taken . . .

    Bud&,
    Here’s the historical info…

Comedians Harry Steppe, Joey Faye (1909-1997), and Samuel Goldman each laid claim to this timeless classic of show business, also commonly referred to as, variously “The Stranger with a Kind Face” (by clowns and clowning aficionados), “Niagara Falls” (by fans of The Three Stooges) or even “Pokomoko” (by Abbott and Costello lovers) and “Martha” (by fans of I Love Lucy).

Saw it. I now have a whole new respect for Barney Frank. He didn’t miss a beat. Most people are usually stunned when a host immediately starts ranting Gotcha! Gotcha! Gotcha!. They’re too busy being bemused by O’Reilly’s imbecility to respond to the notion that the loudest speaker wins. Frank went in knowing the routine and was prepared, just as Phil Donahue can be found doing so on youtube.

I laughed and had to play for my husband. Then I laughed again. We should boycott Fox until they can control Bill. And he calls himself a Christian. Wow, I saw he on GMA blaming the nuns for the way he turned out. I too went to Catholic school and don’t react like that. Seems diplomacy skipped his gene pool and now he’s blaming some poor nun. Come on Bill go get a real life. Because unbiased your not. You need to take a class on how to Chill. Maybe next time you can put on the red nose.

SY — It’s older than that, even. In the late 70s I saw a recreated medicine show and met a couple of the performers (how is too long a story); they had performed what I recognized as a sort of proto-”Slowly I turned”. I asked them about it, and they said they thought it went back at least to the early 1800s…

    I guess I mean that for Bud…

PREDICTION: Some day Bill O’Reilly will take a bullet to the head, and it will be from his own hand.

I’m already surprised O’Reilly hasn’t had a “Morton Downey Jr.” moment. I keep expecting it at any time…

i dont think he has the best sense of humor, ive heard people phone into his radio show with a smart remark and he takes it the wrong way when most of his audience is laughing he sees it as a disruptance and doesnt see the lighter side of the joke.

I saw the interview and I have to say it was quite annoying. I can usually take O’Reilly and I actually enjoy watching his show. Although, I am often frustrated with the fact that he won’t let his guests answer questions.

That having been said for Barney Frank and the democrats not to shoulder any blame for this whole mess is ridiculous. If he were a CEO of a company he would have been fired. But, since he works for the government he gets to keep his job. At least until the people who keep voting for him pull their heads out of their a@$ and realize that he’s just as guilty as the rest of those involved.

Who is it that watches this fool? Does anyone really respect this
jackass O’reilly? He reminds one of a 21st century Archie Bunker.
Unfortunately O’reilly takes himself so seriously, which only succeeds in making him seem even more foolish. Why his viewers
would take the advice of such a mental midget is inexplicable.

Not a Fox guru here, but I happen to see this on Fox, as I was switching between Countdown, Cnn and Fox. O’Reilly looks and sounds like the GOP and McCain. They are scared, as they know they will lose the House and Senate, but how can they not know they Should lose the White House? Just look at WhaT Bush/Cheney/Republican have done to America the last 8 yrs. They don’t deserve another 4 yrs (McCain is too old for 8)
