Frost/Nixon/Bush

Having one popularity-challenged president exit last week, seeing Ron Howard’s Academy Award nominated film,  Frost/Nixon, seemed apropos. As I watched an outstanding perfomance by Frank Langella as Richard Nixon.  I remembered just how much I hated Nixon; how important it was to me when the press stood up to him (thank you, Dan). He had stretched the Vietnam war over far more American bodies than needed to die. It hit me that as much as I despised Bush 43, I did not despise him anywhere near as I did Nixon. But the film brought up another perspective for me.

Langellla’s dour and thoughtful dramatics actually made me feel sad for Nixon, something I thought I was incapable Read more

Steve In Ink - New York Times (1/17/09) Surviving the Obama Comedy Crisis

There’s a rather insightful piece in this past Saturday’s New York Times about the challenge facing comedy writers dealing with the with loss of laugh-a-minute Bush and gaining the laugh-a-year Obama.

It’s pretty interesting, even if they did feel necessary to quote me.

Fellow citizens: For eight years, it has been my honor (and your curse) to serve as your President (what were you thinking?). The first decade of this new century has been a period of consequence (my presidency being the worst) - a time set apart. Tonight, with a thankful heart (though not near as thankful as you are that this is the last speech of mine you’ll have to suffer through), I have asked for a final opportunity to share some thoughts (and pure bullshit) on the journey we have traveled together and the future of our Nation (unbelievably still left standing after my two horrific lack o’leadership).

Five days from now (even though you’d like it sooner), the world Read more

Disappointed Bush Fails As A Role Model

January 13, 2009 · Filed Under Failure, George W. Bush · Comment

Every time a leading sports figure gets caught up in some questionable circumstance there is instant talk show clamor over the dearth of role models. How in the world does a sports star who rarely gets within a mile of a real life experience until their star has long burnt out, gets pegged as a paragon of morality remains a societal enigma.  The lessons that come from a Plaxico Burress, a Roger Clemons or a Charles Barkley more fall in the “what not to do” course studies. But even Barkley, long ago dismissed his role model responsibility.

If there be one person outside the family who might well be positioned to give kids a standard from which they might determine proper behavior it would have to be the President of the United States. Unfortunately, Read more
