Politics Most Stupid Move Becomes The Most Booed: Palin Curse Hits Philly

October 12, 2008 · Filed Under 2008 Election, John McCain, Media, Sarah Palin

SEE/HEAR BOOING BELOW

Philadelphia Flyers owner and major Republican donor, Ed Snider piped in the loudest music he could, but it couldn’t camouflage the Philly boos snowing down on Republican VP nominee, Sarah Palin.  In what will be known forever in Philly history as the Palin Curse, it set the scene for one of the Flyers’ worst opening night, opening period performances ever as they found themselves down to the New York Rangers, 4-0 before the first period was over.

In what should have been a sweet, memorable moment for Philadelphian Kathy O’Connell, voted the Flyers top hockey mom, Snider forced O’Connell to become part of a national embarrassment when Palin was bought onto the ice next to her accompanied by a barrage of boos from the Philly faithful.

Congrats McCain campaign. Mess up a wet dream? You even ruined a home team’s opening night. Sure, the New York Rangers helped, but it wasn’t until Palin left the building the Flyers closed the score to 4-3.
Given enough room, Kate Smith has to be turning over in her grave.

In what had to be the most brainless moves in political and sports history - other than Texas Ranger managing partner, George Bush trading Sammy Sosa to the White Sox for Harold Baines - Snider brought Palin to drop the ceremonial first puck at the Flyers home opener Saturday night. Besides the fact that it is an overt politically-partisan move by Snider it completely distracted the united fan front - and obviously the team - from what is normally a special evening of team/fan bonding which Snider was obviously too partisan to realize that even a 50-50 reaction from the fans, would have boos echoing through the Wachovia Center far louder than cheers.
Now the McCain campaign and Snider will have to deal with embarrassing YouTube clips swirling breakneck viral through the net until November 5.

  • Philadelphia doesn’t take kindly to any icon, friendly or not, messing with their sports teams. There are still many unrepentant snowball-throwing terrorists residing in Philly. Has Snider forgotten Santa Claus being pelted with snowballs at the Eagles game?

But even more traumatic than the public humiliation Snider has provided to Palin and himself, the greatest offense of defiling of the memory of the Flyer’s time-honored symbol of God, country, and the Broadstreet Bullies…Kate Smith.

A great songstress of earlier days, her stirring rendition of “God Bless America,” she sang her way into Philadelphia sports lore when the team played her version of “God Bless America” before a game in 1969. The Flyers began to play the song before a number of home games…many more of them they won than lost. When Smith made a surprise visit and actually walked onto the Spectrum ice on October 11, 1973 to sing the Flyer’s appropriated anthem for their opener against the Toronto Maple Leafs, she carved a place in every Flyers fan’s heart forever.

Smith again performed the song before Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals on May 19, 1974, at which the Flyers clinched their first of two back-to-back Stanley Cups, winning that playoff series against the Boston Bruins 4 games to 2, with Bernie Parent shutting the Bruins out 1-0 in that game.

Smith united the fans even more than the game itself, and now Snider decided to spit on her grave while carving a political divide right through the center of the Wachovia Center.

Kate Smith and Philadelphia deserve more.

      No mistaking booing for Palin.

Sometimes it’s hard to differentiate between boos and cheers, or the chanting of a player’s name when done in unison and sounds like booing.

But not this time. It came through loud and clear…drowning out the music.

    2. SandWitch on October 12th, 2008 1:02 pm

So they didn’t throw snowballs, but Palin should be used to the chill, coming from the northern reaches, don’tchknow.

Please forgive someone who’s never watched a hockey game let alone set foot in Philly, and it wasn’t fully explained…but why would fans pelt Santa with snowballs?

They’ve got something against Santa Claus in the City of Brotherly Love? Doesn’t doesn’t too brotherly or lovey to me.

Ed Snider probably had this effect in mind:
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuremberg_Rally

What with the incredibly loud music.

Note to class action lawyers: probably above the level sure to cause hearing loss.

      Finding Number One

For the reasons explained in section IV of this report, I find that Governor Sarah Palin abused her power by violating Alaska Statute 39.52.110(a) of the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act.
      Alaska Statute 39.52.110(a) provides:

The legislature reaffirms that each public officer holds office as a public trust, and any effort to benefit a personal or financial interest through official action is a violation of that trust.

Someone should send this video to Faux News. They posted Palin was cheered, and the tried to drown out the sound with loud than loud music… Thumbs down there. Thumbs up here

Well, this wasn’t any booing from the spectators.
It came from a few persons close to the camera/microphone.
      Better luck next time!

( I would of course have expressed my dissatisfaction myself but the truth must be revealed!)

BTW, you don’t boo when you disagree as an ice hockey spectator , you whistle, as far as I know…

      R,
I might be off here be off here, but I do believe if those people close to the camera, spectating, were spectators. I spoke to people at the game…BIG TIME BOOING. Why do you think they pumped up the music?

Hooray for all the Flyer fans! Love the booing of the asshole from Alaska! Good on yas!

    12. EG on October 12th, 2008 10:07 pm

Half the media reports on this just show the photo and don’t mention the boos, or play down the crowd to “a few boos” or “mixed”.

Thanks to Youtube, not only does the truth come out, but these media organizations get caught for lying.

    14. Brian on October 13th, 2008 2:11 am

Yea… Hate to say it, but is sounded like the most boos came from the people holding the camera. When they stopped, it seemed like more cheering.

    15. LL on October 13th, 2008 3:57 am

The booing sounds like one guy and a hound dog.

Not easy to make out what everyone else sounds like: general crowd noise.

    16. Rick Taft on October 13th, 2008 3:59 am

McCain/Palin are now being booed at their own rallies too. I think the GOP selected McCain as revenge. He’s been such a pain in the but to them that they decided to make him a sacrificial goat.

    17. Asa119 on October 13th, 2008 4:03 am

Yet another example of democrats having literally no class. It’s kind of sad all these people do this despicable stuff just to be part of the ‘crowd’ when most of the dems I know have no idea what they’re talking about. They just talk alot of shit about republicans because other people and the media do it. I’m no republican…but I would never call myself a democrat. My republican aunt lives in DC. She can’t even put up a Mccain poster in her yard because Democrats throw rocks through her windows and egg her car. It a serious problem. She’s not the only victim. Sarah Palin is a good person with a good family. Just because you disagree with her, like I do on many things, does not mean you idiot, follower, dems have to treat her like dirt.

    18. Dave on October 13th, 2008 4:09 am

What I heard on the video is 2 or 3 loud voices booing in close proximity to the hand-held camera. Listening to the crowd when the voices pause, especially part way through the clip, it sounds to me like mostly cheering. The loud booing of the individuals close to the camera create the illusion that there is mostly booing going on, in my opinion.

    19. Hwbucky on October 13th, 2008 5:09 am

I agree. That booing was so phony, like one or two people near the mike. You dems should be ashamed of yourself for being so disrespectful anyways.

    20. Whatever on October 13th, 2008 5:35 am

I was not there, only just watched this clip, never heard anything about it on the news though, so yeah big deal. The only BOOS i heard were obviously from whoever was taping the event.

    21. Ed on October 13th, 2008 5:50 am

They only Booing I could here was from the person holding the camera. The rest of it sounded like cheering. Most likely the majority were cheering!!

    22. Ed on October 13th, 2008 5:55 am

BTW Francis Hagan, Name calling only shows your ignorance.

    23. danger on October 13th, 2008 12:03 pm

Hey, I did the writeup on Dailykos about the booing. Here’s what I got:

The TV feeds were clearly different. The feed I was watching on, MSG, was unmistakeable and extremely loud booing overtaking the loud fanfare music being pumped into the arena. The other feed, I’m assuming the Comcast one since Ed Snider is the owner, had the boos muffled out with extra cheering. It’s not really clear if those cheers were dubbed over the music or the feed but from every account of people who went to the game was that the TV didn’t do the booing justice. Acoustically speaking, these news shows (like morning joe just now) can get away with telling people with untrained ears or poor hearing that it was mostly cheers — but even the NYTimes and E&P said that the boos were deafening.

And last, but not least, Palin using her daughter as a sacrifice so she and her supporters could complain later about being disrespectful was just sickening. “How date they boo Piper?” Are you serious??

    24. Chris on October 13th, 2008 12:05 pm

Sarah Palin told people at a fundraiser before the game that she was going to try to head off the boos by putting her 7-year-old daughter Piper in a Flyers jersey. Now THAT’S low class. Too bad this video was shot from so far away– the other ones show the Obama/Biden signs waving in the background.

    25. phillyfanatic on October 13th, 2008 2:56 pm

Nope, deafening boos. When it started, my entire row turned around to clap and laugh with the guys who were booing her the loudest. I was there booing her myself. For all of you who DON”T own a camera, the sound recording amplifies what’s near it. If you are near the camera like the guys who were booing then that’s what you’ll hear the most. Get it? It’s going to pick up sounds that are closer than off in the distance. And this is Philly. We don’t tolerate that crap. She was going to get booed. Our own sports radio talk show hosts were warning her not to pull this stunt. Even Chris Matthews tried to tell her not to screw with Philly sports fans. It was just set up to be a disaster.

First of all, candidates for high political office HAVE NO PLACE throwing out the first puck or baseball of a season. I will admit, if it were Biden dropping the first puck, I’d have been less pissed off. However, I still would have felt it was wrong and inappropriate.

I was born and raised in South Philly. I was among the crowds in the streets when the Flyers won their second Cup (I was in the Bahamas on my honeymoon when they won their first). But here is what I feel now - and believe me, I know that I’m being petty:

I hope that this season’s Flyers end up last in their conference, and miss the playoffs by a huge margin. I know that’s not fair to the players. It wasn’t their decision to bring the Know-Nothing Palin in to drop the first puck.

Still, scum like Palin feel no compunction in demonizing entire segments of the population (ie, only “small town” folks are patriotic and “pro America”) that I don’t much care anymore. Sorry, Flyers, but you are now part of the right wing scum machine as long as Ed Snider is your owner. And as long as that dipshit is your owner, I don’t care if you never win another game, let alone another Stanley Cup.
