The Standup Comedy Genius of Mr. Bob Barr

August 20, 2008 · Filed Under 2008 Election, Kind of Satire, Satire

Sure, this could be an onion headline. I mean, a liberal comedy writer and a former conservative congressman who for all intent and purposes seemed to be missing the humor gene, teaming up to create seven minutes of standup nirvana. Well, maybe not nirvana as in heavenly, but then again not Nirvana as in suicidal rock star career path. Still, the result was a pretty nifty performance by the present Libertarian Presidential Candidate at a Philadelphia Political Comedy benefit for sick kids.

It’s a pairing up that I certainly wouldn’t have predicted. Me and Hannity…maybe.  But only after Colmes dies.  I have my standards. But Bob Barr? He stood for everything I despised in the Republican Party. Not everything actually, buteverything negative that wasn’t on talk radio.

But things have changed. He’s no longer backing the Patriot Act, he wants a complete troop and financial pull out from Iraq, supports medical marijuana usage and he realizes what a complete mess Bush and Cheney have made of this country.  And he’s speaking out about it.

That’s why I agreed to write his material for the benefit.  And then there the kids.  After all, we comedy writers do it for the kids.

I also happen to think it’s important for the Libertarian Party to get on the ballot without having to spend every nickel they have every four years.  Believe me, there aren’t many nickels there to begin with.  And it wouldn’t hurt for Barr to be at the debates…on stage.  He’ll need  his polling at 15% for that to happen.

Will I vote for him?  There are limits to my commitment to comedy, but there are a whole bunch of people out there who won’t be voting the way I am either. It’s those people who I believe might want to take another look at Bob Barr.

He’s not the same humorless meanie you might remember.  In fact, he’s far from it, as you will see from this bad angle video from the Variety Club Benefit in front of an sold-out audience of 400 on Tuesday.

And might I add. If you’re not voting for Obama, or sitting at home, why not consider voting for the best damn Libertarian presidential candidate today…BOB BARR.

Who in their right mind would want to vote for Obama? McCain is an acceptable choice. But Barr is clearly the best.

Obama’s just a tired old humorless PC socialist. Anyone concerned about the First Amendment and Freedom of Speech, particularly comedians and fans of comedy to not vote for Obama under any circumstances.

Never said I was in my right mind.

BTW,I am neither one of the nation’s top comedians, nor, in fact a comedian.

    Still, thanks.

Only someone in his “wrong mind” would even consider voting for John “Four More Years of the Bush” McCain.

That was great stuff Steve. Seeing Bob Barr doing a Dangerfield take off was, all by itself, very funny.
The more exposure we can get for Bob Barr for President the better. And showing off his humor is a step in the right direction.
    Nice job.

Sorry for the error. It has been corrected. Nice blog. Let’s stay in touch.

PissoffLady, Really, only somone in the a”wrong mind” would consider voting for 4 more years of Bush. This may surprise you, but a lot of us, would much prefer 4 more years of Bush than a “Democrat lite” like McCain.

Us “Libertarians for Bush” are now supporting Bob Barr. At least Bush supports tax cuts, privatization of Social Security and has appointed libertarians like former Libertarian Party Chair Gayle Norton to high administrative posts. From McCain all we’re likely to get is a bunch of Democrats in his administration, and Democrat policies.

Now that I think about it, depending on what sector of the blogosphere you managed to frequent during that period, you may otherwise remember me as the ever-loquacious (and ever-anonymous) “Captain Obvious” during the Writers Strike.

I was wondering, Steve Young… comedian? Never heard of him. Comedy writer? Okay, still never heard of him. Now Steve Young quarterback, heard of him.
Anyway nice writing job, Steve. Bob did a pretty good job of delivering the material, too.

Thank you, Rusty Z, who I never heard of.

I am a former Hillary supporter that has moved over to the Bob Barr camp. My dad, also another Hillary supporter, is thinking of voting for McCain this year. And I don’t think he is the only one. I hope that some of Hillary’s supporters take a look at Bob Barr. I didn’t know a lot about the libertarian party and didn’t really look into it until I felt the need to. I could not bring myself to vote for Obama and do not really like McCain so my choices were to not vote or find another candidate. I really hope that more Hillary supporters start looking at their options and decide to take a look at Bob Barr’s website and see what he is all about.

Bob is also, so far, the only one who has been hilarious…on purpose.

Steve, so true. I watched McCain’s speech. Sorry I don’t remember which one but I know he got a lot of grief about it but it was the one where he kept losing his place on the teleprompter. It was funny but in a sad way.
